The Computer Vision research area at Xerox Research Centre Europe in France creates cutting edge technology that makes everyday interaction with visual content, such as images and video, simple and effective. What they develop is applied in innovative solutions in particular in the Xerox Transportation and Document Management businesses.
The reputation of this prominent research group has been steadily growing as a result of their many publications in leading computer vision conferences and journals and their world-class results in international benchmarking competitions.
This recognition has made it possible to initiate a number of open innovation collaborations, notably with the world’s top four academic institutions1 in computer vision namely the University of Oxford, UK the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation INRIA, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign UIUC. The collaborations are either specific open innovation projects with XRCE, UAC grants or national government funded research projects in the fields of large-scale object detection, fine-grained recognition, large-scale visual recognition, visual memorability and scene understanding. The team also plans to start another partnership in 2014 with the computer vision research team at CVC in Barcelona, Spain.

In December and with Open Innovation partner INRIA the XRCE computer vision team won the 2013 international competition in fine-grained image classification (FGComp) outperforming research at Microsoft, NEC, Oxford University, Carnegie Mellon University and University of Berkeley.
In late February Florent Perronnin, Computer Vision Area Manager gave an invited talk at the University of Oxford, UK on some of the current XRCE research in the field whilst research team member Eleonora Vig gave a tutorial at the scientific talent camp in Babes Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania.
