Taggant Technology

Chemical markers, taggants and photo/thermal-chemical effects are terms used to label the technology associated with the chemical tagging of marks, inks or toners such that "originals" can be distinguished from "copies". For overt applications the taggant effect may be readily observable such as the application of materials that change colors with slight temperature changes or when viewed at varying angles or when illuminated by "black light". For covert applications the taggant is not necessarily readily observable. For covert applications special sensing systems are required that operate in conjunction with the illumination source and sophisticated algorithms to detect the presence of the taggant(s).

Taggants can involve a number of photo-chemical effects such as; absorbing energy at one wavelength and emitting energy at another, absorbing energy at particular wave-lengths, temporal effects when illuminated with pulsed energy, etc. In addition, taggants can be used in combination with Xerox DataGlyph codes for security of information.

XSIS has produced very successful taggant systems for a number of applications (ranging from marks on documents of value to marks on valuable metal parts) utilizing our XSIS systems engineering capabilities.

Possible application areas include; aircraft parts, stamps, negotiable financial instruments (such as currency, checks, stamps, vouchers, stock certificates, bonds, script, food stamps, etc.) identification and travel documents (such as passports, ID cards, visas, health cards, etc.), identification labels (apparel industry), packaging or seals on items such as CDs, videotapes or software, etc.
