The Business of Cool: Xerox and Jazz

About the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival

Each year, the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival attracts the world’s top musicians, budding stars and everyone in between to perform at what has become one of the nation’s most respected celebrations of music. Natalie Cole, the Fab Faux, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Chris Botti, k.d. lang and Elvis Costello lead this year’s list of roughly 1,000 artists playing 285 concerts throughout the heart of downtown Rochester, NY.

In our third year as title sponsor, Xerox is proud to help the festival celebrate its milestone tenth anniversary. While 150,000 music lovers focus on tunes and fun, we’re behind the scenes focusing on the business of entertainment. In addition to printing all festival signage and VIP and club passes, we’re also enhancing this year’s experience by putting the public on stage with a free photo opportunity and taking a trip down memory lane with our Jazz Fest Anthology scavenger hunt.

Behind the music: Xerox technology

Back in 2009, Xerox kicked off its inaugural year of title sponsorship by providing festival organizers with a simple, efficient solution to prevent ticket counterfeiting. Xerox® FreeFlow® FluorescentMark Text, which is only visible under UV light, made the admission passes easy to authenticate. And a weatherproof, tear-proof stock ensured that they withstood the elements and lasted all nine days of the 2009 event. We’ve added even more security features in 2011, including MicroText marks legible only with a magnifying device and Glossmark® text, which can only be read under inclined illumination.

Tickets and passes aren’t the only printed materials getting the technology treatment. The highly sought after, instant-win record in our Jazz Anthology scavenger hunt features Void Pantagram technology. The collectible record looks like all the others to the naked eye, but making a copy with the on-site Xerox multifunction printer reveals “hidden” text in the output.

Jazz Star: discovering the newest sensation.

In 2010, Xerox presented an "American Idol" style music competition leading up to the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. Dubbed “Jazz Star: The Search for a New Sensation,” the talent competition raised money for a local youth program while providing several virtually unknown musicians with some well deserved time in the limelight. With more than 370,000 votes, saxophonist Dan White was crowned champion and received a prize package that included studio recording time, an opportunity to perform live at the 2010 festival and a cash prize. His CD will be available soon.
