Controlling the Chemical Content of Xerox Products

Xerox has long worked toward minimizing the use of hazardous substances in our products. In support of this objective, we apply strict internal standards and have deployed requirements to our suppliers governing the use of chemicals in Xerox products, parts and supplies. The standard, EHS 1001: Xerox Environmental, Health and Safety Supplier Requirements: Chemical Bans/Restrictions and Part Marking, establishes requirements for regulatory compliance, chemical bans and restrictions and parts marking for parts and materials intended for use in electronic products. All suppliers must meet these requirements as a condition of doing business with Xerox. Xerox also strictly controls the chemical content of our consumable items (toner and paper) that further restricts the use of substances.

European Union’s Restrictions on the Use of Hazardous Substances directive (ROHS)
Electronic Products
Xerox is committed to meeting the requirements of the European Union Directive 2002/95/EC on the restrictions of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (ROHS). This directive restricts the presence of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and certain brominated flame retardants unless feasible alternatives are unavailable. All of Xerox’s new electronic products sold in Europe will meet ROHS requirements on or before the compliance date of July 1, 2006.

Consumable items such as Toner and Paper
The ROHS directive does not apply to toner, paper and other media, which are classified as consumables. However, Xerox understands that customers may still be interested in the levels of ROHS-targeted substances in these items.

Toners
None of the ROHS-targeted substances are intentionally added to Xerox toners but as the restricted metals are naturally occurring, trace levels are possible. Representative toners have been analyzed for lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium and bromine. As expected, results confirm that these substances are not present in Xerox toners above the ROHS-specified threshold levels.

Paper and other media
Xerox has no reason to believe that any of the ROHS-targeted substances are intentionally added to Xerox commodity papers but as the restricted metals are naturally occurring, trace levels are possible. Actions are being taken to confirm with our paper suppliers that these substances are not present above ROHS-specified threshold levels.
