The ENERGY STAR® program was initiated in 1993 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, with Xerox as a Charter Partner, as a way to certify products with specific energy saving attributes. A product's ability to enter a power-saver mode, or series of modes, after a specified period of non-use is a key factor in winning ENERGY STAR status. The program's requirements become more challenging every few years. For more information visit

On April 1, 2007, the International ENERGY STAR program significantly tightened the ENERGY STAR requirements to increase the benefits to the customer and to the environment. Products manufactured after April 1, 2007 are now measured against Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC). Duplex options, signage and documentation are also required.
