About Xerox, Sustainability and Citizenship
Xerox Corporation is a $16 billion global enterprise that helps businesses find better ways to work through innovative technology integrated with document-management services. Over the past 40 years, Xerox has demonstrated leadership in sustainability and citizenship by designing "waste-free" products built in "waste-free" plants, investing in innovation that delivers measurable benefits to the environment, supporting educational and community projects around the world, and many other integrated initiatives.

Xerox's sustainable growth plan includes a 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions worldwide from 2002 to 2012. This commitment aligns with Xerox's early leadership in the international ENERGY STAR® program, which ensures companies create the most energy-efficient products, helping to reduce global emissions. In addition, Xerox is a pioneer in remanufacturing its products and related supplies, and its remanufacturing and recycling practices diverted over 107 million pounds of waste from landfills in 2005.

At the same time, Xerox requires sustainable designs for its products, supplies and paper. For example, proprietary solid ink printing technology generates 90 percent less consumables waste than comparable laser printers. Investments in research are focused on extending solid ink's capabilities throughout the company's product portfolio so these environmental benefits are brought to a broader customer base. Xerox's expertise in document management, especially workflow and digital imaging, is aimed at improving workers' productivity and reducing dependency on paper documents. When paper is required, Xerox continues to develop high-quality recycled-paper products along with default features in its equipment for automatic two-sided printing and energy-saving "power down" features. And strict policies ensure Xerox paper is sourced from sustainably managed forests. Suppliers must show they have taken action to safeguard forest areas of significant ecological and cultural importance and that all fiber comes from legal sources. These supplier requirements protect endangered old-growth forests in need of protection, and they apply worldwide.

Sustainable growth extends to nurturing the next generation of diverse leaders as well as taking care of the communities where Xerox people work and live. Xerox invests more than $15 million each year in areas that support these initiatives, including including scholarships, internships, research grants and programs like the Xerox Science Consultants Program, where researchers deliver hands-on science lessons to elementary students. Through Xerox Social Service Leave, 6 to 12 employees each year are given sabbaticals of up to one year - with full pay and benefits - to work for a nonprofit on a project designed to leave a lasting community impact.

Xerox's initiatives have been recognized by several external organizations over the years. The company's diversity and workplace strategies have earned honors from Fortune, Working Mother, DiversityInc, Black Enterprise, Essence, Latina Style , the Human Rights Campaign and many others. Xerox has won the U.S. Community Service Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Center for Corporate Citizenship, the World Environment Center's Gold Medal, the National Wildlife Federation's Environmental Achievement Award, and three top supplier diversity awards from the U.S. Small Business Administration. In addition, Xerox has been named among Business Ethics' "100 Best Corporate Citizens," among the Innovest/Corporate Knights' "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations," and among the "Most Admired Companies" in its industry by Fortune magazine.
