Xerox offers a number of work arrangements to balance personal, work and family responsibilities; flex time, job sharing and telecommuting; along with other work life benefits such as child-care subsidies and referrals, tuition assistance, adoption assistance, unpaid leave and other opportunities for family and community involvement. At Xerox, men represent two thirds of the total U.S. work force of 28,400. Some of the stories of Xerox working fathers include:- "I have a newfound respect for my mother," - Xerox technician Harry Hilbert
Harry Hilbert, 45, Rochester, NY: Harry Hilbert fills his two days off each week with quality time with his two sons, Harrison, 5, and Bentley, 3-along with things like dishes and laundry. A part time technician with the company since 1987, Hilbert and his wife, Heidi Grenek, who also works for Xerox as a manager, examined their finances after their first son was born and realized that it was in the best interests of the family for Harry to stay home two days a week with newborn Harrison. Now, five years later, Hilbert works part-time, three days a week and the rest he spends at home managing the needs of his boys along with household affairs. - "Xerox allows me to have a visible presence in my daughters' life and provides resources and support for decisions along the way, like quality day care," - Xerox cost engineer Quinae Ewing
Quinae Ewing, 33, Wilsonville, OR: Quinae Ewing is a cost engineer on Xerox's Wilsonville campus. He was single when he started with the company 11 years ago. Although he once considered leaving Xerox to attend law school, it's not a law degree he added to his life, but a wife, Aribania, and two daughters, Quari Messina, 5, and Qoral Maxine, 7 months. The company's flexibility allows him to adjust his schedule so that he can shuttle his older daughter home from a part-time pre-k program. Ewing works in a global group and uses his laptop and conference calls to work virtually during his time out of the office. Ewing, who relocated to the Wilsonville campus from Xerox's Rochester operations, says that Xerox's child care resource and referral benefit was extremely useful as he and his wife tried to find quality day care for their young daughter in an area that was foreign to them. - "Xerox made the process of applying for the funds [for adoption assistance] so easy and stress-free. It really made a difference to have that extra money when we needed it." -- Chris Walker, Xerox corporate human resources
Chris Walker, 40, Lewisville, TX: Chris Walker works for Xerox's corporate human resources department, and credits the company with helping him and his wife, Cheryl, start a family. The couple set their hearts and minds on adoption and was introduced to a baby girl through Covenant Kids, a licensed child placement agency that matches children in need with Christian families willing to adopt or provide foster care. The Walkers met Michaela, now 22 months, in 2005, and in April of 2006, she came to live with them full time. Once they decided to adopt Michaela, they availed themselves of Xerox's adoption assistance program, which provides up to $3000 per child adopted to help cover legal and administrative fees. Once Michaela came to live with them in April, Walker took an unpaid leave of absence from Xerox for two weeks, to help settle her in and ensure a smooth transition. More recently, the couple has benefited from Xerox's child care subsidy program, which reimburses eligible employees' expenses for child care up to a maximum annual amount based on pay. - "Financially, [to take an unpaid leave of absence] has been a burden, but I view it as a long-term investment in my kids' future. I have had several managers during my career at Xerox and each manager has been extremely understanding and supporting of my desire to take time off to be with my family." - Xerox researcher William Fuss
William Fuss, 42, Webster, NY: William Fuss is a researcher in the company's Webster facilities. For 15 of the last 16 years, Fuss has taken an unpaid leave of absence during the summer months to spend more time with his family. As he looks back over the last decade and a half, he has memories of field trips, sporting events, tournaments, classroom activities and family get-togethers heavily sprinkled throughout. During these summer absences, Fuss continues to report to work on occasion to check emails, return phone calls and ensure that he provides support to projects as needed. Earlier in his career, William obtained his master's of science degree in software development and management from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He did so with the help of Xerox's Tuition Aid Program. The program supports an employee's professional development by reimbursing him/her for tuition and fees based upon successful completion of each course, up to $10,000 per year. - "I have plenty of flexibility to work from home during the work week if I need to. "I wanted to show my daughters (15 and 17 years old) that if you want something and you pursue it with reckless abandon, you can accomplish great things." -- Xerox community education program manager Willie Robinson.
Willie Robinson, 42, Rochester, NY: Willie Robinson has been manager of community education programs at Xerox for 15 years. He, too, has benefited from the Tuition Aid Program. Robinson recently earned his Master of Science degree in human resource management from Nazareth College in Rochester. He went to school two nights a week while maintaining his full-time job at the company. He admits that his full time position, managing such programs as the Xerox Community Involvement Program, the FIRST Robotics and the Xerox Science Consultant programs, often spills into the evening or weekends, which suits him fine. "In this job and really across Xerox, we consider ourselves global employees, available 24/7 so it all evens out." - "I'm teaching science lessons in my son's fourth grade class this year, and he is just thrilled to have Dad as the teacher. It gives us both a feeling of pride." - Xerox researcher Fei "Frank" Xiao.
Fei "Frank" Xiao, 43, Webster, NY: Fei "Frank" Xiao is a researcher in Webster and a science consultant for the Xerox Science Consultant Program. XSCP (in its 39th year) provides hands-on science instruction by Xerox employees for students in grades 3 through 6. Through its Science Consultant Program, Xerox provides more than 50 different science kits with materials that allow children to experiment the way scientists do. During the year, they build a circuit, dissect flowers, grow crystals, work with slime and putty, discover static electricity, and explore concepts like probability and chance. Xiao says the experience of being a consultant benefits him, the students and even his children. For more information about Xerox's work/life benefits, visit www.xerox.com/careers. |
