Rochester "Day of Caring" Filled With 1,500 Xerox Volunteers | |
 |
| More than 1,500 Xerox employees in Rochester, N.Y., volunteered their time on May 3, 2006, in the 15th annual United Way Day of Caring event. As Rochester's single largest volunteer effort, the community-wide Day of Caring is designed to promote the spirit of volunteerism, increase the awareness of local service agencies and schools, and demonstrate what people working together for the community can accomplish. Monroe Community Hospital was just one of 70 Rochester sites that benefited from the services of Xerox volunteers. Approximately 100 Xerox employees worked outdoors to clean up the gardens and grounds and worked indoors to host a carnival for hospital residents. This year's carnival theme was "50's Sock Hop," and residents were provided with music, games and prizes. Even Elvis made an appearance for the amusement of hundreds of residents.
"As in past years, the enthusiasm shown by Xerox volunteers is overwhelming, and every year the number of Xerox volunteers increases," said Patti Carter-Morrison, chairperson of the event for Xerox and one of the original participants. "Many Xerox managers see this day as a team-building event as they work side-by-side with their teams. The Xerox name was seen all over town on May 3." Employees were involved in all kinds of work at dozens of other project sites, including: - Preparation for camp opening at Camp Stella Maris.
- Warehouse cleanup at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre.
- Landscaping and yard work at the Villages at Unity Health.
- Spring cleanup including raking, weeding and general yard work at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
- Outdoor cleanup and landscaping at Riverside Cemetery.
- Painting, cleaning and landscaping at various YMCA and YWCA facilities.
- Washing residents' wheelchairs at St. John's Home.
- Working on a cat shelter at the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm.
According to the Rochester United Way, nearly 13,000 volunteers from more than 120 companies and several area schools spent their day working on more than 500 projects in and around Rochester.Supporting the annual Day of Caring is just one of the ways that Xerox people invest their time and energies into Rochester. Xerox employees also volunteer to teach science to elementary-school children, mentor high-school student teams who participate in the national FIRST robotics competition, donate their time to various community agencies through the Xerox Community Involvement Program, and more. -XXX- |
